They say people do not leave bad jobs, people leave bad bosses.
There are no two ways to it. A lousy job is manageable if you have a good boss, who keeps on motivating you to increase your potential. On the other hand, a good job with conducive HR policies but a bad boss means nothing, as you are already operating under high stress and pressure.
Most of us suffer from the existential crisis at our workplace and we do not know what to do about it. Of course, we can’t be impulsive and leave the job when we are pushed to the edge because it gives us job security and earns us our daily bread. However, if the boss continues to demean you even after you take ample efforts to prove yourself, you know it’s time to move out.
It may sound a bit philosophical but having self-esteem at the workplace and feeling good about the environment is all that matters over money. After all, making lakhs for spending nine to ten precious hours of your day feeling conscious about what your boss has to say about you isn’t a great deal.
However, there is a thin line of difference between suffering and letting it go. Below are the signs that you need to look for and take a firm decision:
Your Boss makes you Feel Like They Own You:
If your boss begins to demean you and assign you the task that does not meet your KPI or purview, it is better to have a discussion with him. In most cases, he will blame it for the management and say that it is not under his control. However, reason with him about the task, especially if there’s no growth from it.
When your boss doesn’t take your opinion and feelings into consideration, you know it’s time to look for another job.
You Feel Constant Threat of Losing your Job:
There’s no feeling worse than the lack of security. Job security is vital, it relieves mental stress and instigates a sense of belonging at work. In contrast to this, there are some bosses who never miss mentioning layoffs casually.
When your boss constantly threatens you to throw you out of your job, it is time that you get an offer and draft your resignation letter.
You Feel you are Micromanaged and Face Workplace Inequality:
Equality and integrity aren’t the words that are out there on the wall to attract employees. They have a deeper meaning and are pillars of a business. However, there are times when your potential is undervalued while some of your colleagues are pushed to a higher level.
When you constantly feel like a victim to your boss’ favoritism, it’s time to ditch the job.
A Word of Caution
The feeling of being undervalued at work can be temporary. It could be a result of a slow down at work, as a result of disequilibrium in personal life. Hence, it is important for you to find out the root cause of your situation. Also, keep a tab on the frequency of your ill-feeling.
If it is constant and prevailing for a long time, you should not wait for another day. Given the security at the workplace, leveraging the reach of LinkedIn and hiring portals to search for jobs. Update your resume to better your chances. Once you get your desired offer, it’s time to bid bye to your abusive boss.
